Sadhu

They’ve been obsessing me for years. I searched and found them in Benares, on the banks of the river Gange (India).

They arrive here to get rid of everything and to wait for death. This existence can last for years, sometimes decades, almost a life. Opposite to mine, well organised and filled as a human life can be, to try in vain to push the limits of its end.

In front of a dark background, back to the darkness and nothingness they aspire, they sat. What they wear is all they possess and thus appear in the picture in their entirety. After the picture was made, these men vanished in the crowd and let me with my fascination unsatisfied.

Sadhus are no human like others. They are revered beggars. They chose to live poor amongst the poors. This will make god-men on Earth of them.
